If you’ve ever considered a career in Massage Therapy, plan to attend the Open House sponsored by Colby Community College on Monday, Aug. 2, from 6-7 p.m.  The event will be held in Thomas Hall, room 402.

The Massage Therapy Program at Colby Community College received an important accreditation last semester.  The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork verified that the college program meets all criteria to receive the designation of Assigned School.  Debra Waites is beginning her second year as director of the program.

“Completion of the CCC Massage Therapy Program will allow students to take the National Certification Examination without additional requirements,” said Waites.  “Forty-three states have passed laws to regulate the massage and bodywork profession, usually through licensure, certification or registration.  As of now, Kansas has no regulations regarding massage.  Successfully taking the National Certification Exam will give excellent credibility and open many doors when they enter the work force.”

This is the third year for the program which offers classes during the evening hours. Jobs in massage therapy are becoming more available as spas, clinics, chair massage businesses, chiropractors and other health care professionals are recognizing the importance of touch and massage in healing.

Benefits of massage are an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs and have also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions.

Copy Center coordinator Regena Barnum has been at CCC since July 1980.  She has worked in the Print Shop and Copy Center for three decades.  Regena graduated from CCC.  Her husband Evan and sons David and Christopher also graduated from CCC.

CCC sophomore Marilyn Horinek (Atwood) won first place at the Kansas Community College Business Plan Challenge hosted by Wichita State University.  She received $1,500 for her Horinek Angora Ranch plan.  Horinek is enrolled in the Entrepreneurship program at CCC.

Tony Schroer and his wife Tara both attended CCC.   He has his bachelor’s degree in music education from Oklahoma Panhandle State University and is currently completing his master’s degree at KSU.  This is his second year as the Instrumental Music Director.
